JULY, 9th, 2015 – THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF BAHIA PRESIDENCY AND THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE ROTARY MOBILE HEALTH FOR NEEDY CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS.

ROTARY MOBILE HEALTH NEW WORLD

The Rotary Club of Bahia and its Rotarian and non-Rotarian co-partners take one more step towards the UN Millennium Development Goals, focusing on mother and child care and child mortality reduction. Today Rotary International deployed one more program – integrating the fifth mobile health unit education and health catalyzers. The mobile unit was designed and built on a regular micro-bus frame, all financed by donations of  Rotarians from different countries, in partnership with The Rotary Foundation .

The whole idea started small by some Rotarian volunteers in the year 2011-2012, when the Rotarian MD Professor Geraldo Leite and his disciples of Bahia School of Medicine, acting according to a planned and written Memorandum of Understanding joined forces with the Rotary Club of Bahia and the Rotary International District 4550, for the deployment of the Joint Pro-health Action, which started health promotion works on week-ends at the Rotary School of Itapoan, assisting several thousand needy adults and children of Salvador poorer residential areas.

Immediately after, upon request by Jequié and Guanambi Rotarians the joint efforts were replicated and expanded to various regions of Bahia State, reaching cities in partnership with the neighboring District 4390.

The program was successful and soon unfolded in the “Alliance for Health”, a better organized program signed between Rotary and the José Silveira Foundation, with the operation of the Rotary Mobile Health Unit and its interdependent Rotary Health 3 Blue Van.

The Foundation José Silveira, originally IBIT is a charity entity founded by late Professor José Silveira (Rotarian), a pioneer in the prevention and treatment of lung TB and he was helped by several other Rotarians, including the unforgettable Alvaro Pinheiro Lemos, Gerlado Leite, Carlos Dumet, Monica Moreira and many others.

Furthermore, the importance for the Rotary Club of Bahia adopting the Millennium Development Goals of the UN, notably the fight against infant mortality, raised the motivation of Rotarians who are board members of the charity not-for-profit League Alvaro Bahia Against Child Mortality, led by Rosina Bahia ,herself a Rotarian of Novo Centro Alphaville, among them: Roberto Lerner, Pedro Teles, Eraldo Moura Costa, Eduardo Athayde, Emmanuel Mendonca, Durval Olivieri, Fabricio Soares, Jose Galende, Walter Pinheiro, Jorge Novis, Edilucio Fernandes, Alberto Valenca, Ivan Barroso, forces in various evening meetings to make possible the borader design of the Twenty Year Strategic Planning for the Martagão Gesteira Charity Oncology and Cardiology Children Hospital, in order to expand its activities and make the the entity sustainable for one more century.

The pediatric surgeon MD Emanuel Melo led the planning meetings and took on the implementation of the plans with a very dynamic leadership and a young team in continuous learning and benchmarking with the best entities of Brazil and other countries. We owe to this Doctor, now serving the State Government in high ranks, having upgraded the Martagão to a level of being reference as of now as a Teaching Hospital, in high complexity surgeries, cardiology, neurology, oncology and orthopedics, and , soon in organ transplants and assistance to autism. Maybe the best public service school hospital (dully recognized by both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health) in Northeastern Brazil. When Rotarian visitors came to see the hospital in the year 2013 it was all disturbed by retrofitting civil works. Right now the goal is operating 40 beds of  ICU and Neo-natal ICU. The Martagão now operates with 180 inpatients and 500 out-patients per day and the Rotarian architect donated a master plan for doubling the capacity of the hospital in child oncology.

The League Alvaro Bahia Against Infant Mortality, completed its 92 years, in 2015 and the Martagão Hospital Gesteira its first fiftieth anniversary. Both entities are officially recognized as works of prioritary pub. The League was idealized and founded by Rotarians Álvaro Pontes Bahia and Joaquim Martagão Gesteiraaths their names were given to the entities in their memory). They had the help of several other founders of the Rotary Club of Bahia: Carlos Costa Pinto, Álvaro Augusto da Silva, Edizio Athayde, Aristides Novis, Pamphilo de Carvalho, R. Magalhães, Clemente Mariani, Pedro Ribeiro, Geraldo Dannemann, Norberto Odebrecht, Braulio Xavier and many other Rotarians ofBahia.

Please, Mrs. Rosina Bahia, Mr. Antonio Novaes Jr and MD Adriana Cardoso, as leaders Alvaro Bahia League Agianst Child Mortality, please come forward to receive from the hands of both Rotarian Presidents Antonio Alberto Valença and Anaci Bispo Paim the

This is a pioneering initiative of Rotary in supporting public health efforts for the Government of the State of Bahia. We Rotarians in our SERVICE ABOVE SELF joint effort wish this to be a long lasting and valuable public action in disease prevention education and treatment as well as being a program for development of Rotarianism and durable community, national and international fellowship and cooperation. Let us all keep up the good work managing this program and adding one more Moble Health Unit and, once more, a totally diverse networking multi-disciplinary process: the Mobile Health Against Tuberculosis, a one time solved malady, but now, due to various factors a recurrent deadly bacterial disease, resistant to already developed antibiotics.
